“How can Mathematics help us to fool Artificial Intelligence?”, that was the question we intended to answer at the Taugenichts Bar on the 2nd of May, for the 10th edition of “Wissen vom Fass” (or, “Knowledge from the Barrel”). This event is organized annually by DESY together with the University of Hamburg. The goal is to provide insights into ongoing research in the comfortable atmosphere of Hamburg’s bars and pubs. Hydrogen production through polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) is crucial for efficient energy systems. However, analyzing the dynamic behavior of oxygen bubbles in these systems has been challenging. A recent study, "Deep Learning-Enhanced Characterization of Bubble Dynamics in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers," published in PCCP, introduces a groundbreaking deep learning tool to tackle this challenge.
 
The study leverages a deep learning framework to automate the analysis of video recordings of oxygen bubbles in PEM electrolyzers. Using just 35 annotated images, various U-Net models were trained to achieve high precision (up to 95%) and F1-scores (86%). This method …

Cuneiform tablets
In early February 2024, a new mobile tomographic X-ray scanner made its first scientific excursion to the Louvre in Paris to shed light on the inside of many thousands of years old cuneiform tablets. Cuneiform is the very first manifestation of human writing, produced by imprinting cuneiform letters into soft clay. It was discovered in Mesopotamia and about 13,000 tablets are preserved in the Louvre.
