Institute of Lung Health and Immunity

The Institute of Lung Health and Immunity (LHI) at Helmholtz Munich is dedicated to advancing our understanding of chronic lung diseases and developing innovative therapeutic approaches. Here's a brief presentation of their work:

Mission

The LHI is committed to exploring the immunological mechanisms underlying chronic lung diseases such as COPD, lung fibrosis, asthma, lung cancer, and complications following lung transplantation. Our goal is to translate these findings into preventative and therapeutic approaches to improve patient outcomes.

Research Areas

  1. Immunometabolic Reprogramming: Investigating the interaction between structural-immune and immune-immune cells to understand the pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary diseases and identify new therapeutic targets.

  2. Systems Pulmonology: Utilizing cutting-edge statistical and systems tools to advance the understanding and treatment of pulmonary diseases, with a focus on translational models to validate findings in patient biomaterial.

  3. Environmental Barrier Immunity: Studying the cellular pathways that maintain the functionality of the respiratory barrier and how environmental challenges, such as cigarette smoke and nanoparticles, affect tissue homeostasis.

Key Initiatives

  • Clinical Trials and Partnerships: Collaborating with leading experts to push the boundaries of lung health research and develop innovative treatments.
  • Publications and Awards: Our researchers regularly publish groundbreaking findings in prestigious journals and receive grants and awards for their contributions to the field.
  • Community Engagement: We participate in global events and symposiums to share our findings and collaborate with other researchers.
