I am a biologist and marine biogeochemist by training. My current work focuses on Arctic marine phytoplankton. We use an AMNIS ImageStream Imaging Flow Cytometer to generate high thoughput, high quality phytoplankton imaging datasets. By combining Imaging Flow Cytometry and fluorescent dyes we are developing a method to measure changes in diatom shell thickness on a single cell basis to track consequences of environmental changes on a small scale. In addition, we collaborate to develop automated phytoplankton species identification using machine learning.
